The correct position for holding a young nene during the banding operation.  The head is tucked under the wing for safe keeping.  The bird is held on its back, resting lightly on the knees.  Knees are held together but feet apart in order to keep the holder's shoes from being decorated with nene kukae...
The young nene has now been inverted from its former position, head returned to the normal position and ready for gentle release to the ground below.
